Pub dates, covers, titles, new author, and more—on being an author & publisher

The last couple of weeks have gone by in a blur, mostly because I’ve been hacking and coughing going on a month now.  I caught a cold, but it aggravates some sort of infection I have deep in my lungs from my world travels in the Army, so it takes a long time to go away.  Plus, I don’t go to the doctor like I should.  Pain is weakness leaving the body.  Going to doctors is for wusses.  (I think next time I’ll go right away).  Today was the first day I took the dogs out for a run.  We made all of one mile, very slowly, and called it a day.

Marriage-BargainVisiting New York and West Point and several canceled flights seems forever ago, but it wasn’t even a month.  We now have Jen Squared as Jen Talty and I met with Jennifer Probst and worked out that Cool Gus would publish the first book in her new Posse series in November, which seems forever away, but really isn’t.  Jennifer P, like me, is head down writing.  Jennifer is a NY Times Bestselling author with a bunch of books, prominent among them, the Marriage to a Billionaire series.  You know, if you’re going to get married, the billionaire thing isn’t a bad idea.  Then again.

I have to finish The Green Berets: Chasing The Lost in three weeks.  The first draft at least.  We have a pub date of 7 May and are already ramping up the promo.  We debated title for a long time and received a lot of solid feedback but since I’m merging my first hero, Dave Riley, with Horace Chase from Chasing The Ghost, so we think this works.  I wanted to use Blackbeard’s flag (left) for the cover, but somehow I lost that one.  blackbeard-flagHmm.  So this is the cover below on right:

Coming 7 May 2013

The series is rebooting Riley and Chase as civilians in the low country of South Carolina and they build of team of assorted strange characters.

I just talked to my editor at 47North today and we have a pub date for Nightstalkers: The Book of Truths:  30 July.  And then the third book will be in Jan/Feb 2014.  The Book of Truths focuses on nuclear weapons, the President, a serum that makes people tell the truth, and, well—let’s put it this way:  did you know that Jimmy Carter once sent out the launch codes for our nukes with his laundry?  That pretty much sums up what the Nightstalkers are facing.  But, even better, Hannah and Neeley from my Cellar books, show up in this book.  Neeley meet Roland.  Roland meet Neeley.  And they kill someone, because that’s the kind of first date they’d have.

Meanwhile, my wife and I are working on what we consider our best high concept book ever, Burners.  I won’t say much more about it, but we’re planning on pubbing that on 4 June.  But it’s set in a the un-named future, in a very different society.

I’m getting tired just writing all this.  And that is only the next couple of months.

The first Atlantis book made it up to #2 on the science fiction bestseller list on Kindle when we did a price promo down to .99 and I think it stays at that price for a few more days before going back up.  We actually have reduced prices across the board on all our titles, another decision made in NY.

Oh yeah– notice the cool video that Jen’s daughter did on the left for Nightstalkers.  I’m not big on book trailers, but I like it.

Lastly, yes, I am getting active on Facebook.  Discussing what is going on with writing, life, yada yada and the bisque over on my fan page.  You even get nice photos of the view from Write on the River and also, of course, Cool Gus and Sassy Becca, except there rarely are action pictures of them– usually they’re sleeping.

Are we having fun yet?

  1. Hmmmm, I could say I told you so in a couple of places in the post…Just insanely happy that Blackbeard’s Flag won’t be the cover for Chasing the Lost. But the image keeps showing up…I think Bob is trying to figure out how to get me to use it in a cover somewhere down the road. He doesn’t give in very easily. Sometimes I think he holds on to these things just to mess with me. Not that I don’t like the image, just not for this cover. He’ll keep sending it to me, trying to work it in, somewhere…

Anyone attending Liberty States in March in NJ? If you are, you’ll get to see Jen Squared in action as Jennifer Probst and I will be presenting two workshops together there. Poor Bob, too many Jen’s.

  2. Bob, NOT going to a doctor is probably what kept you able to beat that bug. Most dose people with too much antibiotics (ever really look at that word and consider what it means?), and not enough PRObiotics.

  3. Unfortunately, lingering lung infections can kill you. Don’t be an eejit! Go to the doctor. It won’t affect your manhood, and we need you around to provide us with exciting breaks from reality.

  4. Hello! I am about to begin my own blog and was wondering if you know where the best place to
acquire a blog url is? I am not even sure if that’s what its known as? (I’m new to
this) I’m referring to “http://writeitforward.wordpress.com/2013/02/15/pub-dates-covers-titles-new-author-and-more-on-being-an-author-publisher/”. Exactly how do I go about getting one of these for the website I’m making?
    Many thanks
